Living Hope for Sofievka

It's a normal Saturday for Stella. She has been up since early morning to look after her four children and take care of the farm - not easy without the father, who has left the family.

Here in southern Moldova, it's no different than anywhere else in the country. Many men are abroad for months as guest workers, and many do not return. Poverty in the villages is severe, even in Sofievka and the neighbouring small villages. There is no work, many people despair, seek comfort in alcohol or simply give up.

Every time Roman knocks on Stella's farm gate, it is an encouragement to her. The deacon of the Sofievka church regularly travels to visit families who are particularly poor and have children to care for. For many, this support is the only help they receive. Stella is grateful for the food package and the children's Bibles that Roman brought today.

Reaching children - Reaching families

With great dedication, the brothers and sisters of the small congregation of Sofievka serve to reach the families from their village and from the area with the Gospel.

The access to the families are the children. When we reach them, God's love can also reach the families, tells Maria, Roman's wife, who organises children's classes together with a team from Sofievka. Every Saturday, the joyful laughter of children rings from the already far too small room of an old, renovated building.

Most of these children come from problematic family backgrounds, with parents who drink, who don't care. For these children, it is a true gift that someone engages with them, and each time the children learn something new from the Bible in the process.

For this important missionary ministry, the Sofievka church needs premises and space.

There are so many children from difficult family backgrounds in Sofievka that we could reach, Roman explains, but we simply lack space. We have 50-70 children coming to our summer camps alone. It's important to visit people at home and bring them help. But we also need to invite them into the church, especially the children.

That's why we want to build a Hope Center at the church, so that we can care for the children here, and so that they can carry God's love to their families.
