The country was settled and urbanized by nomadic peoples many hundreds of years ago. Nevertheless, one can still find people on the Kyrgyz steppe who move from place to place, rely on flocks of sheep and cattle, and live in yurts. Traditional Islam plays a central role for most of Kyrgyzstan's inhabitants.
