Turkey is a transcontinental country located mainly on the Anatolian Peninsula in Western Asia, with a small portion on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeast Europe. It borders the Black Sea to the north; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran to the east; Iraq to the southeast; Syria and the Mediterranean Sea to the south; the Aegean Sea to the west; and Greece and Bulgaria to the northwest. Cyprus is off the south coast. Most of the country's citizens are ethnic Turks, while Kurds are the largest ethnic minority.
When night falls in Antakya, darkness covers the destroyed city. There is hardly any electricity, hardly any water. Suffering seems to disappear into deep blackness and yet is more tangible than during the day. Darkness and cold, 90% of the buildings are destroyed or uninhabitable. People who have lost everything. People who are still searching for their relatives and desperately hoping... People who do not know where to go. People for whom every glimmer of light, however small, in the dark streets is a point of attraction towards which they automatically run.
Rubble, tears and sorrow. After the shock of the devastating earthquake, now comes the suffering. Over 48,000 people have died in Turkey and Syria. Thousands still believed to be under the rubble. Desperately have the survivors been searching, waiting, hoping for the miracle that their loved ones will be found alive. Now, large clearing equipment has begun to clear the rubble, carefully, to give the survivors a chance to rescue and burry their dead relatives. 1.6 million people are left without a place of living.
